Every year the Rotary Club of Rockport gathers in the square downtown at 10:00 am and performs the reading of the Declaration of Independence in costume. It has been a tradition now for 14 years, and each year the club expands its costume closet to accommodate the growing group of participants. This event is a much-anticipated part of the 4th of July in Rockport for locals and quickly gathers a crowd of over 250 locals and visitors. The Declaration is read by past president and pastor Matt Wigton of the Rockport Baptist Church in a strong voice booming with conviction. The crowd is encouraged to respond with "boos," "huzzahs" and "fyes" as the reading goes on to describe transgressions of the King of England or the changes signed into law by the delegates of the Second Continental Congress. In the evening, another group of Rotarians participate in the Firemen's 4th of July Parade which kicks off at 6:00 pm. This year's float theme was "America" and included many friends and children of our club members.

With sadness, the Rockport Rotary announces the death of a long-time Rotarian, Domenic Tardif Jr., who proudly served in the Rockport Rotary for 28 years. Dominique Joseph Tardif Jr. affectionately known as "D.J." or "Joey," passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, due to complications from injuries sustained in a house fire. He was 79 years old. Born in Lewiston, Maine, on April 8, 1946, Dominique was the devoted son of the late Dominique J. Tardif and Muriel Minihane Tardif. He shared a close bond with his sisters, Patricia Crowley & the late Fern Desjardin. As a young adult, "D.J." left Maine to attend Leland Powers School of Radio, Theatre, and Television where he graduated in 1966.
Domenic worked for WHDH-TV Boston as assistant director on a number of in-house productions including the station's Red Sox programming, and the Bozo the Clown Show. A morning shoot on Cape Ann brought him to Rockport, where he planted roots and started Bearskin Neck Leathers in 1974. He cared deeply about quality and connection and operated his business ("To the left! on Bearskin Neck") for 49 years. "D.J." was an active member of the community. He belonged to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce for 32 years and served on the board of directors in the early 90s. A second generation Rotarian , he valued serving others and rarely missed a meeting of the Rockport Rotary Club. He sponsored youth athletic teams & donated his time during the holidays to The Salvation Army & local food pantry. Dominique is survived by his four children, Tyla Tardif and her fiancé Jacob Kipp of Kingston New Hampshire; Nathanael Tardif and his wife Katherine Tardif of Gloucester; Sarah Tardif of Gloucester; Russell Amero and his wife Maggie Amero of Gloucester; his sister Patricia Crowley of Yarmouth Maine, and his five grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Fern Desjardin. A mass and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. (info from Legacy.com)

Memorial Update: On Sunday, November 3, 2024 from 2-5 PM, an informal, drop-in gathering will be held at the Rockport Inn & Suites, 183 Upper Main St. Rockport to honor Andy. All are welcome to attend and share their rembrances of Andy. It is with great sadness Rockport Rotary announces the untimely passing of Rotarian Andrew P. Maddox. A dedicated member and 2017-18 past president of the Rockport Rotary Club, Andy lost a short battle with cancer. He was a friend to many and served his club with distinction. For District 7930, Andy served as chair of our District Public Image Committee and held a passion for youth services; serving on our Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Committee and volunteered with our comprehensive Youth Exchange Program. His warm smile, laugh, and sense of humor will be missed. Andrew P. Maddox of Haverhill Massachusetts, formerly of Rockport and Lexington Massachusetts, passed away on August 22nd, 2024 after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Lisa D. Maddox for thirty-six years and the loving father of Amanda Saldi and husband Chaz of Salem, Katherine Maddox and partner Nick Benedetti of Haverhill, and adoptive father of Michaela Hillier and partner Bayron Contreras of Manchester-by-the-Sea. Andrew grew up in Lexington and attended Minuteman Technical High School, where he developed an interest in computers. He would go on to have a career in computer programming and web design, eventually starting his own business.
A Celebration of Life for Andy will be held in the future. Donations in Andy's memory are to be directed to the Rotary Foundation; a fitting tribute to a devoted Rotarian so that Rotary programs can live on into perpetuity in Andy's memory. Donations can be made here.

Rockport Rotary has had an 11-year tradition of reading the Declaration of Independence to large crowds in Dock Square on the Fourth of July. Unfortunately, it was shelved for a couple of years due to the pandemic. This year we were back in force and in full costume, despite our regular Town Crier coming down with—you guessed it—COVID. Bob Gillis and Alan Battistelli stepped up at the last minute with a rousing rendition of everyone's favorite declaration. The club followed this up later in the day with a Rotary float in the Fireman's Parade. Click Read More for more photos.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, In the midst of the coverage around COVID-19, as places of business, schools, and other agencies are taking precautions to prevent the spread of disease the club's Directors have decided to suspend our weekly meetings for the next 2 weeks. We will reassess the situation on March 31st and decide whether to continue not meeting or resume meeting as of April 2nd. During this down time I encourage us all to stay in contact with each other. Peace, Derek Van Gulden President 2019-2020 Rotary Club of Rockport, Massachusetts

The John Lane Auditorium at Rockport Middle/High School was filled with the sound of Rockporters laughing at themselves as Rockport Rotary put on a single showing of Living the Island Life — "A wicked funny musical comedy about life on our side of the bridge." The ensemble cast of talented locals played to a full house, on Saturday, January 19, 2019, in the musical comedy conceived by Rockport Rotary's own Linda Sanders who wrote the book and lyrics and directed the production. A second show planned for Sunday was canceled due to an ominous winter weather forecast. The cast included Jeff McKeen, Wendy Betts, Guy Parsons, Emily Marques, Kathleen Morgan, Bob Ellis, Sue Bonior, Andy Heinze, Jack Reed, Chas Kreis, Gordon Baird, Evelyn Reed, Carolyn Howard, Derek van Gulden, Anne Hyde, Frances Fleming, and Chariclo Malcolmson as Kitty the Dog.

With three major storms hitting in less than a month, Rockport Rotarians answered the call in a major way — raising a combined total of $14,100 from club member contributions and matching funds from the club's coffers. Checks have gone out, including $4,700 each to: - Disaster Aid USA (a project of the Rotary Club of Historic Prince George’s Co, Maryland) for their on-the-ground relief efforts in the Greater Houston area after Hurricane Harvey
- Rotary Foundation Donor-Advised Fund for Hurricane Maria
- Rotary Foundation Donor-Advised Fund for Hurricane Irma
Rockport Rotary trusts in the Rotary Foundation and Disaster Aid USA, and know that these funds will be put to the best use. The membership is happy to help out with the recovery after these destructive storms.

The numbers are in from this year's Polar Plunge, and Rockport Rotary raised a total of $1,915 to raise awareness and fight polio. The Rockport Rotary members were among more than 250 Rotarians and others who plunged into the icy waters of Long Beach in Gloucester as part of the Rotary District 7930’s seventh annual Polar Plunge on February 4, 2017. Rockport Rotary is part of an umbrella Rotary Foundation, a humanitarian service organization with nearly 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Combined Rotary clubs have raised more than $55,000 this year which will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Rotary effort will pay for over a quarter of a million polio vaccines — at just 60 cents per vaccine — for children worldwide. This year’s event added to the over $510,000 raised by local Rotary clubs since the Polar Plunge began seven years ago. “If you want to feel alive, do the Polar Plunge to end polio,” Rockport Rotarian's largest contributor, Bob Gillis, said. Rotary made polio eradication its top priority in 1985. Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99.9%. The Americas were declared free from polio in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000, and Europe in 2002. A highly infectious disease, polio still strikes children mainly under the age of 5 in parts of Africa and South Asia. Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. In the fight to eradicate polio, Rotary has contributed $1.2 billion, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries. Case numbers of the disease have never been lower, and only three countries — Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan — have yet to stop the transmission.
